THE "CRUX" OF THE MATTER
The difficulty of any rock climb is rated by its crux, that
place which requires the most focus, skill and positive attitude.
Even if much of the climb is somewhat easy, if it has a tough-to-navigate
crux, then it gets a difficulty rating based on that factor.
The harder the crux, the higher a rating the climb will have.
Most goals or dreams have a crux, too. Maybe it's raising the
funds to start your business or losing the final five pounds
to reach your ideal weight. It could be completing the market
research section for a report at work.
When I used to find myself at the toughest part of a project
I would often say what most folks say, which is, "I'm stuck."
That perspective became my focus. My momentum would halt. I'd
quickly find myself falling out of the Zone.
Then, thanks to rock climbing, I trained myself to say, "I'm
at the crux." This perspective gives me a much more positive
view on things. When I'm at the crux my goal is to find a way
through it. Just like in a climb, I concentrate more, I get
laser focused, and I look for the best moves that will help
me move through as effectively as possible.
So the next time you find yourself stuck, say to yourself, "Ah,
I must be at the crux." In a moment, you can shift your
attention from the problem to the solution.
ACTION IDEA:
Where in your life do you feel like you're at the crux? Invest
a few minutes how about right now?) to focus on how you plan
to move through it. Could you ask someone for help? Could you
just "let go" and trust that it will work out? Maybe
it might take blocking out a certain amount of time to complete
this goal once and for all. Take action this week and move through
it. First, imagine how good you'll feel on the other side --
then, focus on the present moment as you take the steps toward
success.
